ANTI-EXTENSION core exercises.
WHY DO YOU NEED A STRONG CORE? WHAT PURPOSE DOES IT SERVE?
(For theory review watch
For simplicity, it is best to first think of the core as an ANTI CORE or ANTI MOTION.
As we move through space and manipulate objects with our arms/hands (pushing/pulling/lifting), external forces are acting on our spinal column (protected/stabilised by the core).
The core acts to PREVENT motion (maintains neutral spine).
NEUTRAL SPINE is when our spine is positioned in the middle of all its available motions. Not too bent or curved and/or twisted. Neutral spine is safe.
When we are PUSHING/PRESSING using our arms ( pushing a lawn mower or shopping trolley , kneading a dough, throwing a ball) , EXTENSION forces are acting on our body.
EXTENSION forces act in front to back direction.
EXTENSION forces attempt to distort our spine from neutral position into an extended position (spine becomes more arched).
ANTI-EXTENSION exercises help to train our core to resist the extension forces.
ANTI-EXTENSION exercises help to keep our spine safe and help us produce more pushing/pressing force.
All core exercise can be divided into 4 key categories:
ANTI-EXTENSION
ANTI-FLEXION
ANTI-SIDE FLEXION
ANTI-ROTATION
