India - Mother Teresa Mourners

Thousands of mourners poured into Calcutta from all over India on Tuesday (9/9) to pay tribute to Mother Teresa before her state funeral on Saturday (13/9). The elderly, women with infants in their arms, the physically handicapped and children in school uniforms thronged the streets leading to the Saint Thomas Church where Mother Teresa's body is being kept in a glass casket.

Nuns from the Missionaries of Charity order founded by Mother Teresa prayed non-stop in the church's central hall where mourners have brought flowers and posters. There was silence inside the church despite the crowds at the complex waiting in turn to pay their last respects to the the Roman Catholic nun who died of cardiac arrest last Friday (5/9), aged 87.

Concern is growing over the condition of Mother Teresa's body, which is deteriorating rapidly because of Calcutta's high temperatures, intensified inside the church by the sheer number of visitors.
