4 ways I lower my grocery budget

These four things make a huge impact on my monthly grocery bill. I have three kids under five - they eat a lot for little bodies. A lot of the budget tips I see are about spending as little on food as possible and not considering still striving for nutrition, variety, taste, or time while considering budget. So here is what I’ve done to lower my grocery bill by ~$500 dollars without making major lifestyle shifts.
1️⃣Bought Seasonal produce - no, I don’t have every produce item memorized in my head, but I have a general idea. I know berries are always expensive, but even more so now because they are summer fruits. So, I limit my purchasing of them to one time a month and instead focus on winter fruits like citrus, apples, pears, and kiwis. I purchased nonseasonal produce like frozen blueberries and peaches in the jar to reduce costs since they aren’t in season. 🍑🍓🍊🍎
2️⃣Bought less packaged foods/snacks. It’s impractical for an active young family to not have packaged individual snacks. I have no desire to struggle through public meltdowns because I didn’t have time to pack the snack bag with homemade treats; I’d rather buy them so I know they are there. But I focused on cutting down those items to just one per shopping trip and ideally getting them at Costco for more bang for my buck.
3️⃣ Focused meal-prepping items that have ridiculous prices at the store. For instance, healthy waffles are like 8 bucks for a box of 6. I make my own healthy waffles and freeze them. But I do NOT attempt to make everything from scratch. As cool as I think homesteading is, it’s not for me. I have enough to do without making my own bread or bone broth. (I know some people really enjoy it, and that’s great, but it’s not me.)🧇🧇🧇🧇
4️⃣ Have an eat what’s there a week. The last week of the month is often an “eat what’s there week” where I do “kitchen sink” style meals. It usually ends up being a protein and whatever frozen veggie we have left. Or the last of the baby carrots. But forcing myself to make meals from food we already have ensures less waste and a lower bill.
