Full thoughts about the game here in the description. Remember to Like this video!
After hearing talk about how this is the worst game of the first four Silent Hills, I was prepared to get frustrated and thoroughly dislike this game. And I'll be honest, at first I wasn't sure what to think with the first-person view and the fact that you have to constantly return to your apartment and manage your inventory/save.
But I really ending up enjoying this game. I think it has the ideal Silent Hill combat; it's not as clunky as 2 or 3, but it's not so smooth that it loses its cumbersome feel. Silent Hill isn't Resident Evil, there's not an emphasis on high action and thrills, and they didn't take it that far. Have to say, the combat was a high point.
Additionally, Walter is a great villain. The memos in this one were better than I've seen in previous games, and I liked the story in SH4 a hell of a lot more than SH3. The "hauntings" were a nice touch, and successfully shook up the game a bit when they appeared halfway through the game. Some of them were just irritating (the wall fungus stuff) but some were pretty scary (the portrait, the peephole, the guy coming through the wall) so overall I liked them. I also liked the different "worlds" you could travel to, it made the game feel a little more organized than wandering through the sprawling town of Silent Hill, and I liked that.
Now for the cons.
The worlds were cool, but I could have done without going through them TWICE. It really seems like a bunch of padding to me, making the game longer without having to add much new content. In addition, while I like Eileen, that was without a doubt the longest escort mission I've ever played... and come on, nobody likes escort missions.
Henry is a terrible protagonist. I get it, he's shy - but he's underdeveloped. When he DOES speak, it's mainly nonchalant, generic lines like "What the hell?" or "Are you okay?" or just "Eileen!" Give the guy a little personality. Just because he's socially inept doesn't mean he's personality-less.
I don't understand why the ghosts were invincible. You can only kill them with Swords, which you have to save for the super-ghosts... so that means you're constantly having to deal with an army of ghosts that you have to run away from. Wasn't that one of the criticisms of SH3, that you didn't have to fight most enemies, you could just run away? So in SH4, they make you fight more to protect Eileen, but they give you invincible enemies that you have to run away from? Seems inconsistent in its purpose to me, but I digress.
Addressing the oft-lobbied criticism that this "isn't a Silent Hill" game - I don't really get it. True, it didn't take place in Silent Hill with all the trademark fog and whatnot, but I don't view Silent Hill games as geographically dependent. To me, this game FELT like a Silent Hill game, even though it didn't APPEAR to be one very often. All the memos and monologues about inner torment and religious fanaticism - Seemed pretty much in line with traditional Silent Hill motifs. I've heard some people say that this game was "never meant" to be a Silent Hill game, which I read up on and found out is a myth. This game was always meant to be a Silent Hill game.

Overall, I didn't enjoy this one as much as SH2, but I liked it more than SH3. The disorganization and backloaded story of the third really rubbed me the wrong way, I guess. :P Well, see you guys in the next playthrough!
