Carson--who will make about a dozen or more speaking appearances before returning to Hollywood--says the increase of persons going to doctors for examinations to detect the disease--is encouraging large--but not large enough. He said 100 thousand persons--equivalent to the population of Roanoke--died needlessly of cancer last year because the disease was not detected in time for a cure. The Society made a grant of 68 thousand dollars for cancer research to the University of Virginia last year, he said--and probably will match it this year. Carter, who lost both his wife and his brother, comedian Jack Carson--to cancer--is active in alerting the public to danger signs of the disease. The beneficial effect to the

health of persons who quit smoking--to avoid cancer--is so marked, he said, that it is noticeable in a short time, even to the layman. Carson's television credits include parts on "Bonanza," "Laredo," and "The Lucy Show," which he says was renewed today for another season.
