The 1991 BBC Radio 4 dramatization of Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days stars "Leslie Phillips" as the impeccably precise English gentleman Phileas Fogg, and "Yves Aubert" as his new, eager-to-please, but often bumbling French valet, Passepartout. "Jim Broadbent" also features prominently as the tenacious Detective Fix.

The story begins in London, where the notoriously fastidious and predictable Phileas Fogg makes an extraordinary wager with his fellow members at the Reform Club: that he can circumnavigate the globe in precisely eighty days. To the astonishment of all, he immediately sets off, taking only his new valet, Passepartout, and a modest carpetbag.

Almost immediately, their journey is complicated by the mistaken belief of Detective Fix (Jim Broadbent) that Fogg is the daring thief who has just robbed the Bank of England. Fix sets off in pursuit, attempting to delay Fogg at every turn until an arrest warrant can arrive.

Fogg and Passepartout embark on a whirlwind adventure across continents, utilizing every mode of transport available, from steamers and trains to elephants and even a wind-powered sledge. Along the way, they encounter various obstacles and adventures, including rescuing a young Indian woman, Aouda, from a Sati ritual, navigating treacherous landscapes, and facing a near-miss with a falling bridge.

Despite Fix's persistent attempts to thwart them, and numerous setbacks, Fogg remains remarkably calm and determined. The race against time culminates in a nail-biting finish, where it appears Fogg has lost his wager by mere minutes, only to discover a crucial detail about their journey through time zones that dramatically alters the outcome. The play captures the spirit of adventure, the clash of cultures, and the surprising emotional journey of its characters.
