On the humid banks of the Ganges River in 300 BC, one of the greatest cities of the ancient world was rising. Pataliputra was not just a city — it was the administrative heart of the first empire to unite most of the Indian subcontinent.
Surrounded by massive wooden walls, deep defensive moats, and hundreds of watchtowers, the capital of the Mauryan Empire stood as a symbol of power, organization, and imperial ambition. From this city on the Ganges, the legendary ruler Chandragupta Maurya built an empire that stretched across much of South Asia, transforming the political landscape of the ancient world.
Markets filled with traders from distant lands, war elephants trained for imperial armies, and a vast bureaucratic system described in the Arthashastra all made Pataliputra one of the most sophisticated capitals of antiquity. Greek ambassador Megasthenes even compared its grandeur to the great Persian capitals of Susa and Ecbatana.
In this video, we explore what it was like to stand at the edge of this incredible city — to walk through its gates, hear the noise of its markets, and witness the rise of the first great imperial capital of ancient India.
Step back into the world of Pataliputra in 300 BC — the city that helped shape the history of the Indian subcontinent.
