Filmmakers' statement:
This documentary tells the powerful story of the Korean Language Society’s resistance against Japanese imperialism during Korea’s occupation. Through secret education and the creation of the first Korean national dictionary, the Society risked their lives to preserve Hangul, the Korean language. Their defiance not only saved Korea’s voice from cultural extinction, it sparked a global movement, positioning Korea as a catalyst for linguistic preservation, inspiring endangered communities worldwide to reclaim their identities through language.
The Next Generation Angels Awards are an annual prize established by The Better Angels Society in coordination with National History Day® to recognize excellent, well-researched historical filmmaking by middle and high school students and provide them with mentorship opportunities.
