Medieval Castle of Guardamar del Segura near Alicante Spain in 4k by drone

Описание: The medieval town of Guardamar del Segura and its castle of Arab origin can be visited free of charge, but after the earthquake of 1829 not much remained of this once beautifully situated town. The upper part, which is separated from the lower part by a visible ridge, housed the castle, and below it was the old town.

The lower part is surrounded by a Gothic wall and was significantly rebuilt in the 16th century. Remains found show that Phoenicians were active in the area as early as the 8th century B.C. - this also coincides with my research for another film about the region, the Cabezo Pequeno de Estano where the Phoenicians mined metal on a larger scale. Archaeological excavations are still underway at both the fortress here and the Iron Age site.

The city and its fortress have been under Phoenician, then Iberian, then Roman, then Islamic and then Christian control.

After the earthquake of 1829, it was decided to rebuild the city around the old site, using the stones of the previous city. At the top of the castle area there is still a lonely and abandoned cannon from the heyday of the city which still points threateningly to the sea. When looking at the site, one must take into account that the river Segura was once navigable for several kilometers inland.
