In 2015, Financial Times journalist Dan McCrum did one subtraction and found a €1.9 billion hole in Wirecard's books — cash supposedly held in escrow at two Philippine banks, BDO and BPI. Both banks later said the documents were spurious and that Wirecard was never a client. The "third-party acquiring" profit that was supposed to feed that cash could not be shown to exist. Auditor EY signed the accounts for years; a KPMG special audit could not confirm the revenue; Germany's regulator BaFin banned short-selling and filed a criminal complaint against the journalists. On June 18, 2020, EY refused to sign the 2019 accounts. On June 25, Wirecard became the first DAX-30 company ever to file for insolvency.
