Putin welcomed with grand honour in Delhi as India, Russia eye $100b trade and new defence deals

Описание: Russia's President Vladimir Putin received the tri-services guard of honour in New Delhi on Friday in the presence of Indian PM Narendra Modi as he is on his second day of a December 4–5 state visit for the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit. This is Putin’s first trip to the country since the Ukraine conflict began.

During their meeting, Modi stated his country’s stance after US-proposed peace plan on Ukraine ended without progress on Tuesday. The Indian leader’s remarks came as Trump imposed 50% tariffs on India over its purchases of Russian oil, tariffs New Delhi has called unfair, noting that the US and EU still import billions of dollars in Russian LNG and enriched uranium.

Despite Ukraine conflict, the two leaders also talked about expanding trade, with defence deals remaining main focus, including discussions on the S-400 air-defence system and Su-57 fighter jets. With Russia now supplying about 37% of India’s oil, both nations are pushing to lift bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030.

The visit marks the 25th anniversary of the Russia–India strategic partnership.
