My first ride on the new (Well, Old – 2006) Honda CBR 600 RR...
Freshly repainted and ready to go! Unfortunately... I had a low-side crash.
Despite the scorching heat — over 35°C — the ride actually went pretty well. I felt pretty comfortable on the bike overall. So it’s a bit of a mystery why I ended up going down in that corner. Looking back at the footage from the rear camera, it seems like the rear wheel slid out mid-turn.
I suspect it might’ve had something to do with the track surface. It’s a kart circuit, and we were riding in between heats of two-stroke karts, which are known to spit out a bit of oil. And well... even the tiniest bit of oil is enough to ruin your day when you're on slicks. They just have zero tolerance for that kind of contamination.
Now I'm seriously considering switching to a semi-slick tire for next time — maybe something like Pirelli Supercorsas. I’m not sure I’ll feel fully confident going back out there on full slicks again, especially on that type of track surface. What do you guys think?
Aside from that, the CBR 600 RR rides great! One thing I immediately noticed: the gearing on this red one is completely different compared to my grey CBR 600 RR. The red bike has much longer gearing — and honestly, I really liked it.
Unfortunately, the quickshifter wasn’t working this time. The bike was originally set up with GP shift (one up, five down), as is often used for racing. We changed it back to the standard shift pattern I’m used to — one down, five up — but after making that change, the quickshifter stopped working altogether. I really missed it out there. I’m so used to having a quickshifter on the BMW S1000RR — it makes a big difference on track.
Back to the crash... I definitely felt the rear step out — I tried holding onto the bike for as long as I could, haha. Luckily, my Dainese race suit did its job perfectly. Not a single bruise or injury from the crash!
The bike didn’t get away entirely unscathed, though. The fairings took a hit, the footpeg snapped off, and the on/off switch got broken too. A few other cosmetic bits here and there. Still, could’ve been much worse — I walked away in one piece!
Oh, and the scrape on my arm? That’s actually from the previous enduro crash. So two crashes, and just one little scratch? I’d say I got pretty lucky!
Ah well... just part of the price we pay for the fun sometimes.
Hasta luego! XX
