Under Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the United States Navy bypassed heavily defended islands, strangled Japan’s economy through submarine warfare and aerial mining, and rendered the Imperial Japanese military incapable of continued resistance.
Operation Downfall—the planned invasion of Japan—would have dwarfed D-Day and likely cost hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of lives. It was never launched. Instead, Japan collapsed under blockade, starvation, and strategic paralysis.
Drawing on official records, wartime statistics, and postwar analysis, this documentary examines how restraint, not rage, ended the Pacific War—and why the greatest victory was the battle that never happened.
