Thirty years ago Chicago's near north side, north and east of the river and west of Michigan Avenue, was a jumble of obsolete manufacturing buildings punctuated by the occasional rooming house.
Today, the area that became known as River North is a prime restaurant, gallery, residential and office district.
Albert Friedman of Friedman Properties was a major player in the changes. In the first part of this four-part series he talks about some of the history and how the transformation began.
