Nintendo’s Switch 2 may have “won” December 2025, but the numbers tell a far more troubling story. Circana data confirms Switch 2 was the best-selling console in the U.S. for December, yet data-driven sales estimates place it at only ~800,000 to 1,000,000 units for the month... dramatically lower than what Nintendo historically achieves in a launch holiday. Even more concerning, total U.S. hardware units in December were down 8 percent year-over-year despite a brand-new console entering the market, meaning Switch 2 didn’t expand the market at all — it merely replaced collapsing demand from PS5 and Xbox. In a healthy console launch cycle, a new Nintendo system typically drives the entire market upward. Instead, December 2025 hardware spending rose only because prices were higher, not because more systems were being sold. In pure unit terms, the holiday season underperformed badly, and Switch 2’s “best month” came in one of the weakest December console markets in years.
The longer-term picture looks even worse when you step back to the seven-month milestone — where Switch 2 is already underperforming hardware from two decades ago. By the end of 2025, Switch 2 had sold 4.4 million units in the U.S. after seven months on the market. That sounds respectable until you compare it to the Game Boy Advance, which sold more than that in the same time frame after launching in 2001 — in a far smaller gaming market, and without modern digital distribution. In other words, Nintendo’s most hyped console in history is trailing a 24-year-old handheld in its early life cycle. Launch month was strong, with 1.6 million units in June, but sales collapsed rapidly by fall — just 328,000 units in October — and never recovered to historic holiday levels. For a flagship Nintendo platform, that trajectory is not normal.
The most interesting comparison is still the original Switch’s first holiday... and it isn’t even close. In Holiday 2017, the Switch sold approximately 2.2 million units in the U.S. across November and December, including a massive 1.5 million units in December alone, driven by genuine launch momentum and exploding demand. By contrast, Switch 2’s entire Holiday 2025 window likely lands around 1.5 million units total... meaning Nintendo sold significantly fewer systems in its new console’s first holiday than it did eight years ago with Switch 1. And this happened despite fewer competitors (RIP Xbox), a larger installed Nintendo audience, and a new Pokemon game boosting hype for Switch 2. When a new Nintendo console sells dramatically worse than its predecessor’s launch holiday, trails the Game Boy Advance after seven months, and fails to lift the overall market in December, that isn’t noise — it’s a structural warning sign that Switch 2’s demand curve is already flattening far earlier than Nintendo ever expected. #Nintendo #Switch2 #Gaming
