SHONKY AWARDS
It's time to roll out the lemon carpet for the winner's of this year's Shonky awards! The Shonkys are given out every year to the products and companies that are the worst of the worst, at least, according to consumer advocacy group CHOICE. This year, social media giant Meta has secured a win, or, uh, loss, for failing to protect Aussies from scams. Because according to government data, in 2023, scams that came from Meta's platforms accounted for a whopping 76% of money lost to scammers! But they weren't the only winners. Also on the list was NIB for charging single parents more money for health insurance than couples, these "Grounding Socks" that claim to have health benefits if you plug them into the wall, even though there's little evidence they actually do anything. This Acerpure Clean Lite Cordless Vacuum Cleaner which sucks at sucking, and Daily Juice Co's "Green Mix", because the only green thing in it is green food colouring.
BALI FLIGHTS CANCELLED
This thick cloud of ash caused three Aussie airlines to cancel flights to and from Bali today. It's from a volcano that erupted on Sunday in Indonesia which spewed a column of ash about 9 kays into the air. Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia all decided it was too dangerous to fly through, but are monitoring the situation closely to get people back in the air as soon as possible.
CORPSE FLOWER
When you think of smelly things, you might think of rubbish, bad breath, or poo. But what if I told you there was a flower that smells just as bad as all of those things? This is the Amorphophallus titanum, but it's better known by the name corpse flower, because of it's unique scent. The flower, which only blooms once a decade, reached it's peak bloom this week at the Geelong Botanic Gardens, and thousands of people lined up to catch a whiff, even with a blocked nose! So what's the bad smell all about? Well, it's actually a clever trick to attract pollinators like beetles and flies, which are drawn to the smell of decaying flesh. While most found it pretty stinky, for some it wasn't too bad. The corpse flower won't be hanging around for long. It only stays like this for about 24 to 48 hours, after that it'll go back to hibernation to rebuild all its stinky energy for its next pungent bloom.
BURMA THE ELEPHANT
First up, we're starting with a big delivery from overseas. Inside this box is an Asian elephant by the name of Burma, who's just finished a long journey from New Zealand to Monarto Safari Park in South Australia. Burma is one of 5 elephants that are teaming up to form a herd out there, so she'll be in good company.
BAT BLOOD STUDY
Now to Canada, where a big study on vampire bats is helping scientists better understand how they get their energy. Quick recap, these little guys drink blood. That's their entire diet. Pretty wild, right? And now researchers have found that they can burn the amino acids in blood straight away, turning them into energy, something that is really difficult for other mammals to do.
FESTIVE T-REX
And finally to London's Natural History Museum, where their resident T-rex is getting dressed up for Christmas. I've got to say, it's looking quite smart for an animatronic. Perhaps they should dress it up more often.
