Understanding Cemetery Symbols #19 – Civil War Type Headstones
Walking through graveyards and cemeteries we often see a headstone that is called a Civil War Type. In our current series we’ve been looking at different statuary and gravestones found in cemeteries. We found a description of this type of headstone in our source we’ve been using. Our source for discussing the meanings of these symbols is a book written by Tui Snider, ‘Understanding Cemetery Symbols’ [found here - https://tinyurl.com/e3uymkse].
The Civil War Type Headstone is decorated with a carved image of a shield that typically contains the soldiers name, rank, and home state, and in some cases their unit. The stone is polished marble with a slight curve on top and originally were only for Union soldiers. The style was used for later wars but the one we are viewing is for a Civil War veteran.
Although there isn’t a lot of information about John B. Dubois we found that he was born in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut in 1834. [2] He was 24 years old when he enlisted at new York City August 22, 1862 as a private to serve three years. [3] It was also found that his father's name was Benjamin Franklin Dubois and that John served in the 165th Zouave Regiment of the Union Army and was wounded in battle in Louisiana. John was listed in his veteran documents thereafter as an invalid. [4]
