Описание: Join Ian Rennie as he explores Unicode and what it means for lawyers. Yes, one can insert a symbol in a word processor such as Word or WordPerfect, but what is going on? What is Unicode? What does UTF-8 mean? What is ASCII? What is an “ogonek” or a “macron”? The use of Indigenous terms in writing needs to have specialized characters to properly represent the letters in the applicable Indigenous language. In this CPD we will explore how diversity and inclusion, information technology, language and written expression intersect. From a practice perspective, the proper use of Unicode in some major software will be demonstrated and how some software is incapable of using it properly. The use of diacritics will be explored, including their combining. The old legacy font system will be examined. We will consider the Official Languages Act, the Honour of the Crown, applicable aspects of the Code of Conduct and how the courts deal with diacritics in their judgments. Emojis, a subset of Unicode, will be then be considered with a particular view to diversity and inclusion.
