As rare today as it was when new - The Mercedes 190E 2.5-16 Cosworth was a typically well built, over engineered sports saloon built in limited numbers competing with the Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth and the BMW E30 M3 which was only built in left hand drive. The Mercedes and BMW were more expensive than the Ford and therefore much rarer than the British built car.
When launched, the new model Mercedes 190E 2.5-16, available in 4 colours only, was priced at a staggering £31,520 with automatic transmission and leather upholstery optional. The Cosworth engineered 4 valve per cylinder engine produced 204HP and propelled the car to 60mph in less than 7.5 seconds, not as sharp as the Sierra but this is heavy German build quality. The suspension was lowered and tweaked for precise, safe handling and ABS brakes were standard along with wide, low profile tyres. The cars side skirts, front apron and rear spoiler not only look good, they also reduce high speed lift. Inside the car, high quality sports seats, front and rear, were fitted with a choice of cloth/leather or leather trim.
The low mileage, low owner example we are offering for sale is a credit both to the outstanding build quality of the car and the way it has been cared for. Supplied new in October 1990, the Almandine Red metallic car was delivered with black cloth check upholstery and the optional automatic transmission for the princely sum of £32,354 and soon afterwards had an extra £1,000 spent in upgrading the stereo to a high quality Kenwood system.
The condition of the car is outstanding with superb original body fit and paintwork with no rust. Inside is even more impressive with the sports seats and trim showing only the lightest patina - it looks more like 3 years old rather than 33 years old! Under the boot mat sits the original, unused spare wheel, tools and a rare Mercedes fuel can. Again there is no corrosion. Under the bonnet, the engine bay is super clean with nice original paintwork to the slam panel and inner wings. The under bonnet sound deadening pad appears to have been replaced recently as it looks like new.
Everything works on the car and the engine runs well both from cold and warmed up to temperature. Perhaps this is due to the very extensive service history, mainly by Mercedes, with the most recent being just 300 miles ago. On the road, the steering, suspension and brakes all perform as well as you would expect from a car of this quality and there are no abnormal body rattles.
Supplied with the car are two keys, the original Mercedes Data Card, a very comprehensive history folder full of invoices, MOT certificates, the original bill of sale and fully stamped up service book. There is also an original sales brochure and various magazines featuring the model and this car in particular.
