Before 'The Prisoner' Patrick McGoohan was a globe-trotting agent of NATO in 'Danger Man' (1960). The first season episodes were 30 minutes, and aired in the US as a summer replacement. It took several years for reruns around the globe (and the James Bond craze) to build demand for new episodes. So in 1964 the series returned with John Drake now working for Britain, with new theme music and hour-long episodes. It would run for two more seasons, plus a fourth color season of just two episodes. Both themes are by Edwin Astley ('The Saint'). In the US CBS aired the revamped show as 'Secret Agent'. 'Danger Man' clips have been pitch-corrected.
0:00 Season one opening title. On some prints the opening narration included a reference to NATO, on others (like this one) it didn't.
0:31 Season one end credits.
1:15 Season two opening title and episode intro. New theme ('High Wire') features the harpsichord.
1:58 Season four opening title and episode intro. New arrangement; the show is now in color for its last two episodes.
3:04 Season four end credits.
4:01 BONUS: Alternate (US?) open, similar to original season two but using 'Secret Agent' title. Possibly used in syndication.
4:12 BONUS: US open for season two onward. CBS commissioned a new theme song; they wanted something 'hummable'. 'Secret Agent Man', sung by Johnny Rivers, replaced 'High Wire' in the revamped opening titles and it rose to #3 on the Billboard charts. It was composed by P.F. Sloan and Steve Barry. ('High Wire' was still heard in the episode openings.)
