📸High-resolution images of the inside of biological materials in record time!
Biological materials are masterpieces of nature. Inside, they consist of different structures across very different scales – from nanometres to millimetres – which cannot normally be viewed at the same time.
Researchers at the PSI Paul Scherrer Institute have now refined an X-ray technique that was invented there ten years ago, to resolve these structures simultaneously in the space of an hour – instead of the whole day that was previously needed.
Using a special scanning technique, in which the material is rotated around two axes and scanned with a narrowly focused X-ray beam, they recorded a complete 3D image of the collagen structure of an ossicle at the Swiss Light Source SLS.
🚀 The new SLS will significantly improve the speed of measurements and increase their resolution tenfold in the future – making such analyses routinely available and providing even deeper insights into biological materials.
