NB. THIS IS A VOICEOVER TRANSCRIPT, NOT A FULL SHOT LIST.
(Crystal Beach, TX)
This is what Crystal Beach Texas looks like...six days after Hurricane Ike.
Those homes and businesses not knocked down completely, are still reeling from the damage.
But if you look closely, there are still people here.
NATS: I rode the storm out here in this house."
Despite no running water or power, Miles Chapman is staying behind for one reason: to save his tools.
((Miles Chapman, Crystal Beach))
"And I just wasn't going to sit here and let em rust a way to nothing., I'm nothing without my tools. Had to save them."
NATS: ain't no cure for the summertime blues…
Nearby, the Crystal Palace resort is still standing.
NATS: the water was already at the top of the balcony downstairs
The owner went to the mainland before the hurricane, but manager Cheryl Harwel and a few friends are still living at the hotel.
(Cheryl Harwel, Crystal Beach)
"I love my job."
They are living on supplies they've stockpiled.
((Annabelle Pike, Crystal Beach)
NATS: it's better than being put in a shelter somewhere, cause we're all family here.
Tim Harrison is finally leaving the hotel to go back to the mainland.
(Tim Harrison, Crystal Beach)
"We were standing, tornadoes on one side tornadoes on the other side."
He runs the waste water treatment plants on the island.
He has heard that his daughter wondered if he survived the storm, so he wants to go tell her he's alive.
"The sheriff did, he said it to all of us, if you don't go, then I'm going to leave you here to die, because there will be no help after that."
((Ted Shaffrey, The Associated Press))
Highway 87 the main road that takes you from resort town to resort town here on the Bolivar Peninsula, is miles and miles of devastation."
Fortunately for the people who have refused to leave, some signs of reconstruction are coming back to the peninsula.
Crystal Beach resident Mannon Sullivan is glad of that.
(Mannon Sullivan, Crystal Beach)
"Even though I lost everything, things are picking up, it's going to be coming back, life is returning."
Considering its dedicated residents, the community of Crystal Beach may actually grow again.
