“The main reason for our protest today is obviously the payment. There are many problems here, several categories of employees are affected: auxiliary personnel, nurses, medics. There are two categories of requests: the auxiliary personnel should have salaries fit for 2022 as the other colleagues have. And secondly, all the bonuses should be calculated as being part of the base salary.“

STORYLINE:
Thousands of healthcare workers held a protest in Romania’s capital on Thursday, demanding higher wages, more staff, and better working conditions amid what they say are shortfalls that will lead to declining medical service standards.

Protesters held banners and flags outside Victoria Palace, the Romanian government headquarters, before marching through Central Bucharest.

Gabriel Predica, the Vice President of the trade union Solidaritatea said the main reason for protesting was a demand for an increase of pay to match inflation.

Healthcare workers say they will go on general strike if their demands are not met in the coming days.

Romanian police and prison trade unions also held protests in Bucharest during recent weeks.
