Mosaics 101: How To Make A Mosaic Garden Heart

We love a mosaic for the garden and this one is super easy. This is a great beginner project! There’s no wrong way to make this mosaic heart. We love how it uses all different tiles and baubles. For our mosaic garden heart, we picked out leftover tiles from other mosaic projects. We used metallic mini tiles, pieces of broken china, and small and large round tiles. Then we added in flea market jewels like a broken rhinestone earring, some flower pendants, and even shank buttons.

The rest of this mosaic project is almost as fun and easy and as gathering the jewels, gems, and tiles. You just “frost” a wooden craft heart with 100% white silicone. We spray painted our wooden heart first to prime it. That should help it weather the outdoors too.

Once we frosted the heart with the silicone we arranged our tiles and things. We think it helps to start with your best gems first so they are placed all over the project. Next add your largest tiles. Medium sized goes next then finally fill in the small spaces with your smallest tiles. We added pearls and beads too for the littlest spaces. Be sure to press each item into the silicone. It will act as both the adhesive and the grout for your mosaic.

Let the mosaic heart cure/dry over night. We used the silicone to adhere a hanger to the back. Depending on the thickness of your wooden heart you can either screw in a hanger or glue one on. The project isn't very heavy so you will probably only need a light duty hanger.

Here Are The Tools And Materials Needed To Make Mosaic Garden Heart

Materials
Wooden heart, about 7-8”
White primer spray paint
Hanger
Large, Medium and Small Round Tiles
Metallic Mini Tiles
Broken China Pieces
Broken Earrings
Flower Pendants
Pearls
Beads
100% White Silicone
Putty knife

Steps
1. Spray paint the heart.
2. Cover the front of the heart with an eight inch layer of white silicone.
3. Press the tiles and jewels into the silicone starting with the largest and finishing with the smallest.
4. Let cure overnight.
5. Add hanger to the back.
