 Dr.Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel, also known the Syama Tunnel and formerly known as the Chenani-Nashri Tunnel, is a road tunnel in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir on NH 44 (former name NH 1A before renumbering of all national highways). The work was started in 2011 and was inaugurated on 2 April 2017 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

It is India's longest road tunnel with a length of 9.28 km (5.8 mi). It is the first tunnel in the Indiawith a fully integrated tunnel control system. The tunnel reduces the distance between Jammu and Srinagar by 30 km and travel time by two hours. The all-weather tunnel bypasses snowfall and avalanche prone areas in winter at places like Patnitop, Kud, and Batote that obstruct NH 44 every winter and cause long queues of vehicles - sometimes for days at length.

The tunnel is located on the lower Himalayan range at an altitude of 1,200 m (3,937 ft).The southern portal (end) of the tunnel is at 33.0463°N 75.2793°E and the northern portal (end) of the tunnel is at coordinates 33.1285°N 75.2928°E. The tunnel has been excavated starting from about 2 km (1 mi) from Chenani town south of Patnitop to Nashri village north of Patnitop.

The foundation was laid for the project in July 2011 by the then Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah with Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, under the ruling UPAgovernment.The original estimate to build this two-lane tunnel was ₹2,520 crore (US$350 million), but escalated to a total of ₹3,720 crore(US$520 million).The scheduled date of completion for the project was May 2016 and the executing agency was hopeful of finishing the job by December 2015, which was around five months ahead of the deadline. Later, due to a dispute between the construction workers and the executing agency, the work was delayed and the target of completion ahead of schedule couldn't be achieved. The next planned date was June 2016 which was then further extended to July 2016.

On 12 October 2016, it was reported that almost all the work had been completed and the remaining work was planned to be finished in a few days and that "98 percent civil work including construction of 9 km tunnel and its approach road has been completed while the installation of equipment and gadgets like sound diffusers, ventilators, fans, firefighter equipment, electrical panels, transformers, lighting etc. inside the tunnel is under progress and likely to be completed in next 20-30 days." They added that after the completion of remaining work, it has to pass the quality and commuters’ safety tests, and that the entire process would be completed by last week of November and authorities will either inaugurate the "ambitious" project in last week or November of first week of December, depending upon the availability of representatives from Union Government.

However the project had not been completed by January 2017 and there was an uproar in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, where the opposition legislators demanded to know why the tunnel was not opened stating that both Jammu-Srinagar and Jammu-Kishtwar National Highways are closed at various places due to land sliding and added that several passengers were trapped on both the Highways at various places.
