"On Monday, February 8, 2021, at approximately 11:29 P.M., an officer with the Oxford Police Department attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle, the driver of the vehicle failed to yield to the officer and a pursuit ensued. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Clay Tatum (38 years of age, a resident of Lafayette County), fled from the pursuing officer into the county. The officer called for assistance and continued the pursuit. The vehicle eventually stopped, at which time Mr. Tatum exited the vehicle and fled toward a residence. A police canine was deployed in an attempt to apprehend him but the canine was unsuccessful. Officers pursued him into the residence, where he brandished a pistol and pointed it multiple times at an officer. After repeated commands to drop the pistol, which he failed to obey, officers fired.
Officers began performing life-saving measures including CPR. Additional responding officers assisted in the life-saving measures until medical personnel arrived. Mr. Tatum was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations was immediately contacted and assumed control of the investigation. All officers involved were wearing department-issued body cameras, which were activated. All video evidence has been turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations.
Thank you to everyone for giving us time to provide a more detailed update. We know this is a challenging time for our community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all families involved, especially the Tatum family.
All press inquires should be directed to the Public Affairs Division of the Mississippi Highway Patrol."
