Brussels hails Ukraine's new grain export plan

The European Commission has now reviewed the action plan proposed by Ukraine.

The parties exchanged comments on Ukraine's action plan, which was "a very important and positive step forward", Gill noted.

The European Commission also recognized the work of the Ukrainian side, which presented the relevant action plan within just 10 days. Poland and Hungary did not join the meeting, although such participation "is not mandatory", according to the EC spokesperson.

"The European Commission is continuing to engage with all countries concerned, both within and outside the Coordination Platform," news agency Ukrinform quotes Gill.

European Commission Executive Vice President for Trade Valdis Dombrovskis will visit Slovakia on Oct. 5-7 to assess the effectiveness of measures to develop the capacity of "solidarity export lanes" in the regions bordering Ukraine.

On Sept. 15, Brussels decided not to extend the ban on the importation of Ukrainian grain into five EU countries, provided that Ukraine complies with certain rules, including the implementation of export control measures.

From the outset, Romania and Bulgaria did not impose unilateral bans on the export of Ukrainian grain. The other three countries affected by the grain crisis — Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary — continue to ban the import of Ukrainian grain unilaterally. Apart from wheat, rapeseed, sunflower, and maize, Poland banned Ukrainian cereals and flour, and Hungary expanded the list to 25 items.

On Sept. 18, Ukraine filed lawsuits against three EU countries with the World Trade Organization. The Ukrainian government proposed a compromise scenario to the EU and neighboring countries.
