Описание: On Aug. 29, 2023, a Fulton County grand jury handed down a racketeering-influenced and corrupt organization indictment against 61 individuals alleged to be part of a criminal conspiracy against a police training facility just outside of Atlanta known by most as “Cop City.”

The indictment is the latest in a crackdown on a now multi-year protest movement against the controversial Cop City. Since Summer 2021, thousands have participated in marches and demonstrations against the facility. Cop City opponents set record turnout for public comment on three separate occasions. For a year, a group called the “Forest Defenders” occupied the land in and around the proposed training center site, an effort that combined with other forms of protest, delayed the start of construction by over a year.

A series of police raids ended the forest occupation. Dozens were arrested and charged under the Georgia domestic terrorism statute and in January 2023, police shot and killed Manuel Paez Terán, a forest defender known as “Tortuguita.”

In the media, political leaders have called opponents of the facility violent, outside agitators and terrorists. The 109-page indictment paints a confusing picture of these 61 individuals, intermingling acts of community care and mutual aid with mayhem and violence.
