Ancient Greece gave us democracy, philosophy, and the Olympics, but forgot to mention they also had a five-level nightmare hierarchy of slavery that would make a dystopian video game blush. At the top were house slaves, basically unpaid assistants who got yelled at in marble mansions and maybe stole olives on the side.
Then came skilled slaves, like blacksmiths and teachers, who were respected just enough to be overworked. Level three? Field slaves, aka sunburned labor machines growing someone else’s grapes. Below them were public slaves, owned by the state and treated like government printers, used constantly, never appreciated.
And at the bottom were the mining slaves, who lived, worked, and died in darkness so rich guys could wear shiny things and recite poetry about freedom.
