India is set to mark a significant development in defense aviation this September 2026 with the rollout of the first indigenously manufactured C295 transport aircraft from the Tata Advanced Systems facility in Vadodara. This event signifies the operational commencement of the first private sector military aircraft assembly line in the country under the Make in India initiative.

The aircraft is part of a 21,935 crore contract signed with Airbus Defence and Space to procure 56 transport planes for the Indian Air Force. Under the agreement terms, Airbus delivered the initial 16 aircraft in fly-away condition from its final assembly line in Seville, Spain. The remaining 40 units are being manufactured domestically by Tata Advanced Systems Limited to ensure technology transfer.

The C295 is a tactical airlifter designed for short take-offs and landings on semi-prepared airstrips. It serves as a replacement for the aging Avro fleet and provides critical logistics support in high-altitude border areas. The project aims to develop a comprehensive aerospace ecosystem within India by integrating domestic suppliers into the global supply chain.
