One of my favorite tactics for landing new freelance clients is finding companies that have full-time job postings up on their website and actively working to turn those into freelance gigs instead.
I've done this recently with multiple new freelance content marketing clients and it works so well for 1 reason: The fact that they have a live job posting tells me that they clearly need help.
If you can position yourself as an expert at doing the type of work they're looking to hire for, they're going to be flexible as to the format for which they'll get that help.
Will it work every time for any kind of company? No.
I've personally had the most luck with using this strategy on startups that have a little more flexible company culture—if they allow employees to work remotely, that's a good sign that they're flexible in other ways too.
Because ultimately, their REAL goal is to simple. They want to be the best within their niche, get more clients, drive more traffic, generate more leads, have a better user experience, redefine their brand.
Convince them that you'll be able to help them do that without needing to be a full-time employee by leaning on your unique strengths and experience.
The ball is in your court.
Here's how to turn full-time job interviews into freelance clients:
• Step 1: Land the interview
• Step 2: Impress the hell out of them
• Step 3: Sell them on YOU
• Step 4: Present a plan (show them you're owning this role already)
• Step 5: Position contract-based work as a test
• Step 6: Set your ideal contract duration
• Step 7: Close the deal
Your biggest hurdle will be convincing them that you can do as good a job (or better) than anyone else they'd be able to find.
Do that and you'll be in a position to dictate the details of your working relationship.
