Episode 1701 of the Vietnam Veteran News Podcast will feature another one of Dr. Bob Rodrigues’ Vietnam War presentations to the podcast. He is a well known adjunct professor of history at Duquesne University which is sited in Pittsburgh, PA. The beautiful campus sits on the banks of the Monongahela River.
He teaches a course on the Vietnam War and Era at the University. He is providing a series of programs to this podcast that come from that course he teaches at the University on the American Vietnam War and the era surrounding the conflict.
In the previous episode he picked up on the history of Vietnam at the end of World War II and introduced us to Ho Chi Minh. He was the long serving Vietnamese patriot who declared his country’s independence in 1946.
Rodrigues told about Ho being a valuable ally to this country during World War II in our fight against the Japanese. His guerilla forces harassed the Japanese occupation forces who had taken over his country after the Japanese ally, Nazi Germany took the French colonials out of the picture. The guerillas also were very helpful in the rescue of downed American flyers during the war.
He also introduced us to the big battle that occurred at the French outpost at Dien Bien Phu. In this episode Rodrigues goes into more detail about the French debacle that occurred there. He lays out the three significant things that resulted from the battle.
He then moves on to the political follow up to Dien Bien Phu which was the Geneva Convention of 1954. There seven nations with skin in the game gathered to decide the fate of the former French Colony – Indochina,.
