Canadian MPs returned from their winter break to Parliament Hill and partook in the first oral question period of 2026.
Conservative MPs, led by Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre, highlighted rising grocery prices and affordability issues within Canada. In December, Canada's Food Price Report 2026 forecasted overall food prices to increase by four to six per cent and the average family of four is expected to spend over $17,000 on food in 2026.
Poilievre said Canada has “the worst food price inflation in the G7. It's rising twice as fast here in Canada as in the United States of America.”
Meanwhile, Liberal MPs championed Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Monday announcement: the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, a GST rebate for low and modest income families that raises the existing GST credit amount by 25 per cent and provides a one-time payment equivalent to 50 per cent of the GST credit this year.
Jobs and Families Minister Patty Hajdu said the newly announced rebate could provide “up to $1,900 more for a Canadian family to help with those costs of living that the Conservatives have been talking about all fall.”
Mark Carney was absent for question period and met with Ontario Premier Doug Ford in Toronto.
