An Economy of Means is a kind of companion piece to my percussion trio An Index of Possibility. While Index uses a wide range of materials—glass, metal, wood, ceramic, drums, toys, found objects—to create music that flows freely between distinctive and colorful spaces, An Economy of Means does the opposite, deliberately taking one instrument and making the most of limited resources. With a few simple preparations—tin foil, a manilla folder—and canny use of the vibraphone’s natural colors, the piece traverses a vast and varied terrain, as broad and ambitious as the trio but in a narrower, more focused context. Set in six movements, the nearly thirty-minute piece doesn’t have a specific narrative. Even so, there is always a sense of motion, of drifting from space to space, with little dramas unfolding along the way. Commissioned by Doug Perkins and a consortium of alumni from the Chosen Vale Summer Percussion Seminar, the piece reflects the infectious spirit of friendship and collaboration so strongly felt at Chosen Vale.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER:
Celebrated for his “smart, appealing works” (The New Yorker), Robert Honstein is a composer of orchestral, chamber, and vocal music. His works have been performed throughout the world by leading ensembles such as the Albany Symphony Orchestra, Eighth Blackbird, Third Angle New Music, Ensemble Dal Niente, the Mivos quartet, the Del Sol Quartet, Present Music, New Morse Code and Hub New Music, among others. He has received an Aaron Copland Award, multiple ASCAP awards and honors from the Barlow Foundation, Carnegie Hall, and New Music USA. He has also received residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Copland House, the Bang on a Can Summer Institute, and the Tanglewood Music Center. Robert is a founding member of the New York based composer collective Sleeping Giant. His debut album ‘RE: You’ was released by New Focus Recordings in 2014 and his second album, a collaboration with the Sebastians was released in 2015. In 2016 Cedille records released Sleeping Giant’s collaboration with Eighth Blackbird, ‘Hand Eye’, to critical acclaim. His most recent Album, An Economy of Means, was released on New Focus Recordings in 2018. Upcoming commissions include a percussion concerto for Colin Currie and the Albany Symphony and new works for No Exit New Music Ensemble and percussionist Mike Compitello. Currently he serves as composition faculty and program manager at NYU Steinhardt.

ABOUT DOUG PERKINS:

Doug Perkins specializes in new works for percussion as a chamber musician and soloist. His performances have been described as “terrific, wide-awake and strikingly entertaining” by the Boston Globe and he has been declared a “percussion virtuoso ” by The New York Times. Over the last 15 years, Doug has commissioned and premiered over 100 pieces works and with such composers as David Lang, Steve Reich, Paul Lansky, John Luther Adams, Nathan Davis, Larry Polansky, Christian Wolff, Glenn Kotche, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Tristan Perich. He founded the percussion quartet So Percussion and the Meehan/ Perkins Duo, and performs regularly with Signal, eighth blackbird, the Chicago Symphony’s MusicNOW, and others.

Doug’s critically acclaimed recordings as a soloist, conductor, producer, and member of the Meehan/ Perkins Duo and So Percussion can be heard on the Bridge, Cantaloupe, Harmonia Mundi, New Focus, and New World labels. They have been called “brilliant” by the New York Times and named to numerous Top10 of the Year lists. Doug is presently on the percussion faculty at the Boston Conservatory. He produced John Luther Adams’ Inuksuit, named one of 2013’s top records by NPR, The New York Times, the Boston Globe, the New Yorker, New Music Box, and Time Out New York. He is also the Director and founder of the Chosen Vale International Percussion Seminar. Doug received his Bachelor’s degree from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Masters and Artist Diploma degrees from Yale University, and his Doctorate from Stony Brook University. His principal percussion teachers were Jack DiIanni, Jim Culley, and Robert Van Sice.
