From the 15th century on, the town's salt stalls, which were demolished in 1778, stood on the site of today's square. The resulting square was initially used and named as a parade square and was redesigned into a green area in 1804. It has had its current name since the beginning of the 19th century. In the time of National Socialism, the square was named Ritter von Epp-Platz (Reichsstatthalter in Bavaria).
Just like the adjacent Kardinal-Faulhaber-Straße, the Promenadeplatz was an address for the aristocratic palaces concentrated in the Kreuzviertel. In 1885 the baroque Palais Hörwarth was demolished for the construction of the Parcus House. In 1951 the war-damaged baroque Maffei Palais was demolished to make room for the extension of the Hotel Bayerischer Hof, into which the former Palais Montgelas was also integrated. A representative building for the Dresdner Bank and the Gunetzrhainerhaus can still be found on the square. Five monuments have been erected on the square today: the Lorenz-Westenrieder statue, the Orlando di Lasso statue, the monument to Elector Max Emanuel, the monument to Christoph Willibald Gluck and the monument to Maximilian Joseph Graf von Montgelas. The monument to Wiguläus von Kreittmayr originally standing here was moved to Maximiliansplatz and was not rebuilt there after the Second World War.

A curiosity is the di Lasso statue, which has been adorned with posters, flowers and grave candles by Michael Jackson's fans since his death in 2009. You remember Jackson here because he stayed at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof several times when he was in Munich.

The Bayerischer Hof on Promenadeplatz in the north-western old town of Munich is a grand hotel that is still used by prominent guests and state guests in Munich today.
The hotel is part of the alliance The Leading Hotels of the World.
The hotel was built in 1841 on behalf of Joseph Anton von Maffei right next to his own palace (Maffei Palais) based on plans by Friedrich von Gärtner. It initially had around 100 rooms and two halls. The better-known guests included Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary and Sigmund Freud.

In 1897 the hotel was purchased for 2,850,000 gold marks by Hermann Volkhardt, who had the facade redesigned in the style of historicism. At that time, artists such as Enrico Caruso were performing in the large ballroom. During the Second World War, the building suffered from the RAF air raid on 24/25. April 1944 heavy damage, but was rebuilt after the war.

In 1951 the war-damaged Maffei Palais, a magnificent baroque building built by Enrico Zuccalli and Martin Gunetzrhainer around 1685, was demolished for an extension of the hotel. In 1969 the Palais Montgelas to the east became part of the hotel.
