US Says It Gave India ‘Permission’ to Buy Russian Oil, Sparks Sovereignty Debate

The remarks came from Scott Bessent, who said the waiver would last 30 days and applies to Russian oil shipments already at sea near Southern Asia. Washington says the move is intended to ease pressure on global energy markets amid escalating tensions in West Asia.

However, the language used by U.S. officials has triggered a larger discussion about India’s strategic autonomy and whether New Delhi should require approval from Washington for its energy decisions.

At the Raisina Dialogue, Christopher Landau also warned that Washington would not allow India to repeat what it views as China-style trade advantages.

Observers say India today has diversified partnerships across the world — including energy ties with Russia and the Gulf, and strategic cooperation with Europe, Japan and Indo-Pacific partners.

For New Delhi, the issue goes beyond oil — it touches on a core principle of its foreign policy: strategic autonomy.
