How NOT to wind a manual watch: the new owner of a $6,500 Panerai trying to get his watch going.
A mechanical wrist watch is foremost and above all a PRECISION INSTRUMENT.

A manual watch is wound by hand. Turn the winding crown all the way to the point at which you feel you've reached the end of the spring, and then stop.
As you go, the resistance will increase but stop only once you can't wind it any further.
A watch in good working order (especially one with a large balance wheel like an Unitas-based Panerai) will most likely start 'ticking'
without a need for a 'shake'. If you have to start it (impulse it) then do so VERY GENTLY while keeping the dial / face parallel to ground.
Vigorous vertical movement may cause serious damage!
