Why did experts label the A39 Tortoise tank — once hailed as one of the most heavily armed and armoured British heavy tanks WWII designs — a dead end project? Originally ordered in 1944 to break through formidable defenses with its powerful Ordnance QF 32-pounder, this super heavy tank design quickly grew in size and complexity, ballooning to almost 80 tons and becoming extremely expensive and unwieldy.
By the time the first six WWII tank prototypes were built and tested in 1946–1948, the war had already ended and British priorities had shifted toward more mobile, versatile armor. The Tortoise’s slow tank mobility, enormous weight, and logistical challenges made it impractical for any real battlefield role, so despite its excellent armament and thick protection the vehicle was never put into mass production.
In this video we dive into the full story of this heavy assault gun history, including how it fit into the broader development of British armored vehicles, why it failed to meet evolving tactical needs, and how its fate reflects broader tank development failures in the twilight of World War II.
