Starting petunias from seed can quickly fill every tray in your greenhouse. Instead of using traditional seed trays, in this video I demonstrate a simple and incredibly efficient method called a seed snail.
A seed snail is a spiral planting method that allows you to grow dozens of seedlings in a very small footprint, making it perfect for gardeners working in small greenhouses or indoor seed starting setups.
In this experiment I take a dense carpet of germinated seedlings and roll them into a single seed snail containing multiple varieties of petunias, including Vista Petunias, Wave Petunias, and Tickled Pink. By mixing varieties in one spiral, a single seed snail can produce enough plants to fill containers, hanging baskets, or even an entire flower bed.
This method saves space, keeps seedlings organized, and makes transplanting incredibly easy later in the season. When it’s time to plant outside, the spiral simply unrolls and the seedlings can be separated or planted in clusters for instant color.
All of this is happening inside my Prairie Pod greenhouse, where efficient space use and early seed starting are essential for growing a large number of plants before spring arrives in our cold prairie climate.
If you’re looking for a creative seed starting technique that lets you grow more plants in less space, this seed snail method might completely change the way you start flowers.
🌱 In this video you’ll learn:
• How to build a seed snail for seedlings
• Why seed snails save greenhouse space
• How to grow mixed petunia varieties in one spiral
• A faster way to transplant seedlings later
