Understanding the Healing Tool in Lightroom Classic
The Healing tool in Adobe Lightroom Classic is a powerful feature designed to correct imperfections in photographs. It works by replacing unwanted elements with textures from another part of the image. Unlike the Clone Stamp tool, which copies pixels exactly, the Healing tool blends the sampled area with the surrounding pixels for a more seamless repair.
Issues Resolved by the Healing Tool
Skin blemishes
Dust and scratches
Small unwanted objects or distractions
The Healing tool comes in two forms: the Spot Removal tool (which can work in 'Heal' or 'Clone' mode) and the Content-Aware Remove feature introduced in newer versions.
How to Use the Healing Tool for Blemish Removal
Step 1: Open your image in Lightroom Classic's Develop module.
Step 2: Select the Spot Removal tool from the right panel or press the shortcut 'Q'.
Step 3: Ensure the tool is set to 'Heal'. This allows Lightroom to blend the fixed spot.
Step 4: Adjust the brush size using the slider or by scrolling the mouse wheel.
Step 5: Click on the blemish you want to remove. Lightroom automatically selects a sample area to cover the blemish.
Step 6: If necessary, drag the sample area to a better spot for a more natural look.
Step 7: Fine-tune the opacity if needed to blend the correction smoothly.
Healing Dust Specks:
Dust specks often appear as small, dark spots on images, especially noticeable in uniform areas like the sky.
Follow steps 1 to 3 above to select and set up the Spot Removal tool.
Step 4: Zoom in on your image to identify all dust specks.
Step 5: Adjust the brush size so it's just larger than the dust speck.
Step 6: Click on each dust speck to remove it, adjusting the sample area as necessary.
Removing Unwanted Objects:
For larger objects, the process requires more attention to detail.
Follow steps 1 to 3 above.
Step 4: Increase the brush size to cover the entire unwanted object.
Step 5: Click and drag over the object. Lightroom will attempt to replace it with a suitable area.
Step 6: If the result isn't satisfactory, you can undo and try again, or use the Clone option for more control.
Step 7: Adjust the feather and opacity to ensure the replacement looks natural.
Optimizing Healing Brush Settings:
Feather: Controls the softness of the edge of the brush. A higher feather setting blends the repaired area more smoothly.
Opacity: Controls the transparency of the sampled area. Lower opacity can help with blending in textured areas.
Size: Match the size of the brush to the size of the issue you're addressing.
Visualize Spots: This feature helps to identify imperfections that are not immediately visible by providing a high-contrast view.
