So you’re looking to get in shape at the comfort of your own home? You’ve stumbled upon an app called home workout and you’re wondering if this app is actually worth your time.
Well I’ve done the dirty work for you, so I’ll explain exactly if it’s something that can help you reach your goals or not.
When opening the app, you’re greeted by a user-friendly set up guide, for the app to create a standard plan for you. This part of the app is obviously not too important, what we will be reviewing are the workouts.
At first glance, the beginner workouts are absurdly easy for novices to do. Though this is fundamentally a good entry point for people who are only just starting their fitness journey.
The app integrations including the exercise demonstrations, automatic rest periods and start timers are great features. But are usually the standard in these types of apps.
Again, the issue with a lot of these home workout apps are the difficulty of the workouts. Once someone progresses to the advanced workouts, it doesn’t get dramatically more difficult. In fact only the total exercises and reps increase.
As someone of my strength level, it would be a walk in the park in all areas.
I also have a problem with burpees being included in the advanced chest and leg workout. Since having cardio included in the workout is counter intuitive when we’re trying to stimulate muscle hypertrophy. The question is, why are we trying to gas ourselves with burpees, while also trying to train for hypertrophy in the next exercise. Imagine doing a 100m sprint, and then trying a 6RM of bench press 30 seconds after. This is not optimal and a huge problem.
This wouldn’t be a bad idea, if the general workout goal was overall fitness. But we’re trying to build muscle.
This is a common theme in most of the workouts in this app. The advanced arm workout has you doing shadow boxing for some reason. And we also have a few static stretching exercises that should not be performed at the start of the workout. This is a recipe for disaster and a lot of Personal Trainers like myself would cringe at this fact.
And being a Personal Trainer that’s been at the game for years now, I can instantly judge the effectiveness of these workouts simply by looking at them. And they’re quite disappointing.
I’ve said in the past that these types of apps are great for beginners. It’s also great for pure convenience because it’s really easy and fun to pull up an app and start the workout.
But for anyone serious about building muscle, and getting in shape, there are simply better methods to take. If anything, the OG MADBARZ workouts would be more effective. And I’m talking about the OG format of that app, not the new one.
The last thing to talk about is the pay wall behind more workouts. Paying about $60 a year for everything in this app isn’t terrible, but then again, the workouts simply are too easy, and unoptimised.
Personally, I feel like if I had the opportunity to revamp home workouts entire exercise selection myself, it would actually be pretty good.
This is why I’ve constructed my own program in a format that allows for someone at any strength level to progress.
Think of these apps as your toddler phase. And once you’re ready for some serious, and intense workouts. You’ll step into the big leagues.
I didn’t want this review to be completely roasting the hell out of home workout, but I have to be honest. I never bullshit you guys.
So, to conclude, I think this is a decent app (all things considering), for beginners. But for anyone else, you may be wasting your time. There are better methods you can take that offer superior workouts.
So take the time to do your own research and find a proper program. I obviously offer my own program for anyone, which actually works. We currently have free limited spots, so jump in if you’re serious about taking your physique to the next level. Joining is completely up to you.
