James Kalm tries to keep track of the career arcs, developments and evolution of acquaintances he’s met through the Williamsburg Brooklyn art scene. Many of these artists have become some of today’s most highly recognized American artists. Rick Briggs is an early member of this Williamsburg cadre and is beginning to get a bit of the over due attention he deserves. “I Love Painting + Painting Loves Me” is Rick’s latest offering. This intimate group of work presents paintings with a pared down vocabulary of graphic devices. The artist uses his expertise as a professional house painter to fabricate works as simple matter of fact objects, whose main subject is the act, tools and materials of painting itself.
Jean Dubuffet The Hourloupe Cycle at Pace is a wonderful survey of Dubuffet’s late work. This show features not only paintings, some monumental, but also sculpture and maquettes featuring the linear characters rendered in black and white drawing, with the primary colors schemes, and striped patterns that were dominant in the master’s last period.
