The Unspoken Rules of Modern Music

Recently, I went back and listened to Phil Collins’ Anthology, and while the songs are still incredible, something jumped out at me immediately: These mixes are quite different than modern music. Honestly, the mixes wouldn't pass in today’s music landscape.

There’s very little low end by modern standards — and if I turned in a mix like that to a client today, it simply wouldn’t fly. Not because it’s bad, but because music, technology, and listener expectations evolve.

In this video, I use that moment as a starting point to explore how music production has changed over time.

This isn’t about saying modern music is better — or that older music is worse.

It’s about understanding where we came from, so we can better understand where things may be going.

If you’re a producer, mixer, or artist, this matters more than you think.
Because if you don’t understand why music sounds the way it does today, you risk:

-Making mixes that feel outdated

-Losing listener engagement

-Missing opportunities to push creativity forward

Understanding the evolution of music gives us context, and context gives us freedom — to break rules intentionally, to innovate, and to create music that actually connects.
