The decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) with potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is a redox reaction. Here’s the balanced chemical equation for this reaction:
2 H2O2 (aq) + 2 KMnO4 (aq) → 2 MnO2 (s) + 2 KOH (aq) + 3 O2 (g) + 2 H2O (l)
In this reaction, potassium permanganate (KMnO4) acts as the oxidizing agent, and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is oxidized to produce oxygen gas (O2) and water (H2O). Manganese dioxide (MnO2) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) are formed as products. The reaction can be quite vigorous and may even produce effervescence due to the release of oxygen gas.
