Dear Mayor, Commissioners, and Residents of the City of North Port,
I am writing as a recent but deeply invested resident of North Port. Like many in our community, I have followed the logo redesign process with great interest - and growing concern. While I understand the goal of modernizing our city’s image, the current proposed logo has sparked widespread unease. In conversations with neighbors, local business owners, and longtime residents, one sentiment rings clear: this design does not reflect the heart, history, or future of North Port.
I am formally calling for a postponement of the rebranding vote. The current process feels rushed and the proposed symbols do not truly represent North Port. What I’m hearing from residents is that they’re being asked to choose “the best of the least best options” - and that is not how we should define our city’s identity.
Why I feel compelled - and appropriately positioned - to speak on this:
My background is in Anthropology - the study of people and culture. Over the past year, I have traveled through all 48 contiguous states with the Van of Valor, observing firsthand what makes communities thrive and what branding genuinely resonates versus what feels like forced simplicity. When I crossed into North Port, I was immediately struck by the current city design. It may not be modern in a minimalist sense, but it is accurate to what it intends to represent - a symbol that feels authentic rather than imposed.
Unintended Symbolism & Design Concerns:
The new proposed logos look like forced conversions. For example:
What is the purpose of a 12-pointed star? It is not the sun, and it risks carrying unintended religious connotations that the city may not wish to invoke. Unintentional religious iconography is an increasingly common pitfall in “simplified” municipal logos - let’s not fall into that trap.
The abstract water imagery bears an unfortunate resemblance to the logo of my grandparents’ hospital in Charlotte, NC - hardly the unique, vibrant identity North Port deserves.

Honoring North Port’s History & Culture
North Port is not a generic city- it’s a Purple Heart City, an ecological haven, and a close-knit community built on warmth and resilience. Our visual identity should embody:
Our unique natural landscape: mineral springs, gopher tortoise highways, sandhill cranes, and coastal mangroves.
Our patriotic spirit and honor as a Purple Heart City.
The palpable sense of welcome that newcomers like me feel immediately.
The current designs, unfortunately, feel disconnected from these living, breathing qualities.
The City’s Goals vs. Community Reality
I recognize the intent to modernize, unify, and attract growth. But from what I’ve witnessed:
Unity: This process has, unintentionally, created division and animosity.
Trust: Confidence in city decisions has been shaken.
Identity: A logo should tell our story - not hide it behind generic shapes. As one resident put it: “If an area rebrands before genuine growth, it looks like grasping for a mask, not building an identity.” ...
