So Carl Benjamin was good enough to spend a couple of hours talking about ancient history with me again. This time we discuss Xenophon and his best known work, The Anabasis. That is the account of his adventures as a much younger man, when he took part in an attempt to depose the great king of Persia, Artaxerxes, and replace him with his brother, Cyrus, in roughly 400 BC. The tale takes some extraordinary twists and turns, with lashings of ye olde ultra-violence. It's just a great story.
