Today we look at the critical and box-office failure that is one of my all time favorites. Sir Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of Love's Labour's Lost is a lush, gorgeous film with an excellent cast, beautiful sets and costume, a goofy screwball sense of humor and some of the greatest classic showtunes woven in. It's a real arthouse piece, but made by a studio and with a relatively high budget. It is so different and takes so many chances that it's kind of crazy. It's not just a movie I adore, but one I highly respect. It's not perfect, cause no movie is, but I want to give you some insight into why I think the critics and audiences cheated themselves of something truly special and wonderful.
This film is a jukebox musical using great songs from the 30s and 40s era. It's based at the brink of World War II as tensions rise in Europe. Using Shaekspeare's dialogue and poetry, mixed with old fashion musical sensibility from the Golden Age of musicals. The film calls to mind Top Hat, Shall We Dance, and An American In Paris with it's great moments of non-diegetic dances and fantasy sequences. The film is so ambitious and even if it isn't your favorite, it's one more people ought to see!

Love's Labour's Lost is a 2000 British musical romantic comedy film written, directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh, based on the comic play of the same name by William Shakespeare. The first feature film to be made of this lesser-known comedy, and Branagh's fourth film based on the work of Shakespeare.
