In our ecosystem, the odonates play a crucial role and act as a bioindicator of the ecosystem. They are natural biocontrol agents of mosquitoes, black flies, blood-sucking flies. In the agroecosystem, they act as pest populations controller agents.
Though the Indian odonates fauna is well described in terms of adult taxonomy, their ecology is poorly known. Ecology is crucial for odonates conservation. There is no comprehensive account of Indian Odonates after Fraser's fauna volumes published during the nineteen thirty's.
Large scale habitat alterations such as damming, channel diversion, sand mining and pollution is seriously threatening the survival of these species.
