No matter how you look at it,
the essence of mixing drums is
making sure everything is in
phase... and triggers for metal.
Listen...
Now let's take a look at the phase...
Almost everything here is noise gates and polarity knobs,
the rest is just a minimum of EQ and one stereo expander.
Noise gates isolate kick mics and prevent subsonic
frequencies from running free in the background.
Notice how they sound tighter with the gates on.
The polarity knob on one of them doesn't help much
in isolation but in context it was the right decision.
Now listen to the low end in context.
In the kick trigger we only increased the brightness.
Note that the automatic volume compensation and
Linear Phase has been activated in the EQ.
To expand the snare we inserted PS22-XSplit
in the bottom mic (Watch "How to expand the stereo of a snare without adding reverb" - • How to expand the stereo of a snare withou... ). This adds realism to the space where
the drums are located.
Like the kicks, the snare also has an isolation
gate that only lets solid shots pass.
Thanks to this we can add EQ without fear
of affecting the other kit pieces or the cymbals.
Finally the classic of the classics that
everyone knows, the punch line of snares, Pro Tools Lo-Fi!
Next up are the triggers. We use several samples
from DrumXchanger to balance with the faders.
This is where we take the signal
for the reverb sends.
The only plugin we added was
a polarity knob on one of them.
In the tom mics we only have noise gates, same
reason as before: to control the duration of the lows.
Most of the tom sound comes from the triggers.
Again, noise gates. Note the settings are different
in each case.
In the overs we removed the very low end with
linear phase cuts. This solidifies the whole kit
without affecting its space.
Finally a little more phase inversion in one of the
room tracks and we are ready for comparisons.
If we consider all this valid we will see that
mixing drums is about carrying out technical
processes that anyone can master, the rest is
to move the faders which depends on the
taste of each one, therefore it cannot be
taught so easily.
