In 1920, America was rocked by the publication of Main Street, a satirical novel ridiculing middle-class values and American smugness. He was called the conscience of his generation and his novels, which horrified the literary and political establishments, went on to become required reading in English classes for decades.
About the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund
